When Franceska Mann, a Jewish ballerina, arrived at Auschwitz in 1943, she was ordered to undress and change into a prisoner’s uniform. Instead of obeying quietly, she undressed in a way that distracted the guards. She then grabbed a guard’s pistol and shot him, killing him.
She also managed to injure another guard before she was shot and killed. After her attack, another woman nearby saw an opportunity and convinced a few other women to fight back. Before they were all killed, they managed to scalp one Nazi soldier and tear off the nose of another.
