What happens to a person’s rank when they leave the military and enter civilian life? Do they have to start over as a private?

This is me a couple days ago at the most recent Marine Corps Birthday Ball I attended this year.

I was on Active Duty from 2014–2018, exiting active duty as a Sergeant of Marines. All throughout 2018, I decided to take the year off before deciding the Marine Corps wasn’t so bad after all then joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 2019.

Then due to certain circumstances in 2022, I was not allowed to reenlist. That’s a whole different story for a whole different time later. But in 2023, I received a call from a Marine Corps Prior Service Recruiter who turned out to be an MOS classmate from almost 9 years before.

Would you like to come back in Vu? I got you covered!

Above and beyond he would go to get me back into the Marine Corps, specifically the Reserves to include giving the uniform off his back which included the Dress Blues Alpha Coat I’m pictured wearing.

I spent a total of two and a half years altogether combined from 2018 to 2022-August 15th of this year, yet here I am, still retaining my rank and winning in life.

Semper Fidelis and Happy Belated Birthday to all Marines out there!
