Lynn Murphy, a mother of four

Lynn Murphy, a mother of four, was asking for money on the streets in Massachusetts when a state police officer drove by. At first, he just drove past her, but then he came back with food he had bought from a nearby restaurant. Lynn thought he was going to give her a ticket for panhandling, but instead, he gave her the food. But he didn’t just leave it there. He asked her to come to the back of his police car and sat with her on the bumper, sharing a meal together like a picnic.

The officer’s name was Luke Bonin, and a passerby took a picture of them eating together and posted it on Facebook. The photo was shared more than 100,000 times.

Lynn said, “I thought he was just going to give me the meal, but when he said, ‘Come around the back, it’s such a beautiful day, we’ll have a picnic,’ it really touched my heart.”

The Massachusetts State Police also shared the photo on their website and explained what happened: Trooper Bonin had just finished at court when he saw Lynn, who seemed to be in a tough situation, asking for help. He drove by but then decided to stop at a nearby place to get two meals. When he returned to her, she thought he was going to tell her to leave, but instead, he offered her the food and said, “I’m not here to kick you out.”

They then sat together, shared their meal, and talked.

The state police wrote, “We know Trooper Bonin didn’t want any attention for this, but we are proud of him. We commend him for his kindness and for doing something good for someone who needed it. Our state police officers do selfless things every day, and most of the time, it goes unnoticed. But not this time.”
