Here is one I have posted a few times over the years but have been asked for again, so here it is…. Here is a photo which will stagger many. This is William Routledge of Lingdale with his dog Laddie. Many of us oldies have actually seen this event a few times. William used to do many roof repairs and here he is in Lingdale more than likely on the high Street with the Shaleheap to his left. On one occasion he went up onto the roof and was amazed to see Laddie come onto the roof where he was. Laddie had climbed the ladder himself to be with his master. William told the tale, how on earth was he got to get Laddie down? however Laddie went down himself step by step feeling it with his front paws as he went. From that point on Laddie was a regular sight on the roof with William. Amazing stuff but absolutely factual. Even the Evening Gazette got in on the act with a photo. Some years later when Bill had, had a little too much to drink he was laid collapsed on the pavement in Lingdale and no one could get near to help him up as Laddie stood guard snarling and growling at any one who went near. He would have savaged them. Such was his love for his master. So here you have it, the roof repairers Dog Labourer.
