After we lost our beloved dog Alex, my husband noticed a newspaper ad from a local animal shelter. One of the dogs in the photo reminded him so much of Alex that he encouraged me to go see him in person. As I walked down the line of kennels, my heart broke—I wanted to take every single one of them home. Then I saw the dog that resembled Alex. But just across from him, I noticed a small black dog, trembling in the corner.
When I met him in the greeting room, something just clicked. I knew in my heart he was meant to be part of our family. We waited anxiously for my husband to get home from work. The moment Max laid eyes on Bruce, there was an instant connection. Max climbed into Bruce’s recliner, wrapped his little paws around his neck, and fell fast asleep. From that moment on, Bruce proudly called him the perfect dog.
We adopted Max when he was just six months old, and he’s surpassed every expectation. He never chewed a single thing he shouldn’t and was house-trained from the start. He adores people and, like Bruce, greets everyone with friendliness and warmth. Max truly is our Perfect Pal.
Over the past seven years, we’ve gone on to rescue many more dogs, and I’ve become an active volunteer with our local humane society, fostering dogs in need. It’s never easy to say goodbye when they find their forever homes—but knowing it opens space to save another life makes it all worthwhile.
If you’re considering a pet, please visit your local shelter or rescue group. Volunteer, foster, or adopt—you might just change a life. I know Max changed ours forever.
